What to Expect During a Stretch Therapy Session

Stretch Therapy (or fascia stretch therapy) is a gentle one-on-one restorative body work done one on one between a therapist and client. Sessions are performed on a massage table where the client remains relaxed and the therapist assists in stretching the client’s entire fascial system. Unlike the stretching that occurs in yoga and other dynamic stretching modalities, where certain muscles have to remain active in order to stretch opposing muscle groups, the stretch that occurs during these sessions is under a fully relaxed body, aiding in a deeper stretch and tuning in with the parasympathetic nervous system. (In other words, you can expect to chill out and relax fully.)

Getting started with stretch therapy

When you arrive for your first session, your therapist will ask you specific questions regarding past injuries, recent pain or stiffness, and any goals you might have. He/she will then tailor each session around your individual needs and goals. It is similar to massage in that it is delivered one-on-one and on a table. You would, however, wear comfortable clothes during the whole session. 

Stay relaxed during the session

During your session, the therapist will focus on movements that target the fascia, connective tissue, and muscle that surround the joints. He/she will oscillate between different stretches and incorporate traction, circumduction, activation and release of the fascia and joints. The table is also equipped with stability straps where one leg will stay anchored under the straps in a stable position while the therapist works on the free side of the body. Your goal during the session is to stay relaxed and passive, to breathe and let the stretch therapist take the weight of your limbs and move you through the stretches. Your stretch session should be pain free. There will be moments during the session where you will feel a deep stretch, but it should not be painful or pinchy. If you feel any of these sensations during the session please let your therapist know so they can make modifications for your comfort. 

Overall, you should expect each session to be a relaxing experience that allows you to feel better in your body. 

How often should you get stretched?

Mobility and pain relief are often improved after the first session, but it is recommended that sessions be scheduled regularly. Session frequency is dependent on one’s goals and needs and can range from weekly to once per month on average. We recommend front-loading more sessions to start in order to get the most out of the therapy, then taper off and schedule maintenance sessions once range of motion, flexibility and joint stiffness have improved.
